WELLINGTON, November 14.

The figures quoted by the Intelligence Department of New Sou^h Wales to prove that population was being attracted from New Zealand to Australia were challenged by the Tourist Department, and submitted to the Registrar-general for examination. The latter'a statement indicates that New Zealand is really getting population from Australia. The figures for the period 1901 to September of this yeac show the movement of population to have been a» follows:— New South Wales to New-Zea-land, 111,684; New Zealand tq New South Wales, 90,513; New Zealand gains 21,171. It ia pointed out that many people gomg to England from New Zealand take intercolonial steamers for Sydney and book there for England, having no intention of staying in Australia. Mr Yon Dadetasen quoted the following figures for the whole' Commonwealth for the period mentioned: Australia to New Zealand. 161,830 j New. Zealand to Australia, 122,149.
