TALK OF THE DAY

THE D.J.C. SUMMER MEETIXO.

The attention of horse-owneis and trainers is directed to the fact that on Friday of this week nominations must be handed in for the Dunedin Jockey Club's summer .meeting, which is dated to take place on December 26 and 28. The events for which the club invites nominations collectively form the most attractive programme which has ever been hung up in conneotion with a Wingatui summer meeting ; and that being so it is well worthy of patronage. It is perhaps unnecessary to point out that owners who help clubs by way of nominations are actually helping themselves, ac progress in the 6porfc cannot be made unless there i^ that co-opera-tion which ultimately result* in liberal

prize-money. When a club can issue a card which promises good sport, then the public comes to complete the " triumvirate" which is essential if complete success is to be achieved. The principal items on the D.J.C. summer programme are the Otago Handicap, oE 200sovs, one mile and a-quar-tor; Federal Handicap, of six furlongs, 13(kovs : St. Andrew's Handicap, of 150sovs, one mile; and the Grandstand Handicap, of 120sovs, 6ix furlongs. These four races arc to be decided over popular distances, and should attract good nominations. The juveniles are catered for by the Dunedin Handicap, of 125eovs, four furlongs ; and the Juvenile Handicap* of llOsovs, five furlongs. The Otokia Welter, of lOOsovs, the Allanton Welter, of lOOsovs, and the Farewell, of lOOsovs form a trio of races which are worthy of patronage ; and particular attention is drawn to the fact that each of the hack events is endowed with 100sov6 in prizemoney. Two hurdle events and « Trial Stakes complete the programme. Handicaps for the first day are due on Tuesday, December 17. and acceptances must be declared on Friday, December 20.
