I November 16. — We have been visited by several gales of wind of almost cyclonic violence, but with the exception of a few forest trees uprooted no damage of a serious nature is reported. The _ weather is very dry. and gardens, fields, and pastures are beginning <to suffer through want of rain. TBe Passing of. Pioneers.— lt was with somewhat of a shock that we learnt of the sudden demise of two noted Otago pioneers — Messrs Jopp, of Arrowtown, and Mr H. Craig, of Lawrence. Intimate friends of these two gentlemen speak highly of their integrity and uprightness in all their dealings, and also of their geniality and kindness to each and all placed in their charge during the early coaching days of the southern ' provinces. Much sympathy is expressed from this quartei for the friends and relatives of the deceased gentfemen. Tourist Season. — The Lumsden-Te Anau coach opened the season's running on Wednesday, 31st ult., and the number of passengers travelling so early augurs well for a -busy and prosperous season. Messrs Crosbie Bros, are to be congratulated on the high-class end up-to-date 'condition of their teams and vehicles. Property Sales. — Mr Andrew Small, of this town, has purchased a large block of the Waitnea Estate, recently held by Mr F. Wallis, of -Gore. We all wish Mr Sma,li every success in his new investment. Auction Sales. — Messrs Sutherland Bros., of Castle Rock, held a clearing sale last Monday. Everything was sold at very satisfactory prices, a pedigree mare bringing as high as £55, and all other dead «nd live stock in proportion. Wedding Belle. — Mr Jonn Sutherland and Miss Earl (both of Athol) were married at the Lumeden Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, €th inst.,- by the Rev. James Lymburn. A large number of townspeople visited the church on the happy occasion. Mr and Mrs Earl, now residing at Lumsden, invited a large number of friends to a social at Athol (their lete home). A very pleasant evening wae spent, and dancing was kept up to well towards morning. Obituary. — Mr James Congrieve died on Saturday morning, 2nd inst., at his residence, Lumsden. He had been ailing for a long time, and death, must have come as a happy release from a long and painful illness. The funeral took place on Sunday, & large number of friends following the remaine to the Lumsden Cemetery. The Rev. James Lymburn officiated at the graveside. Siokness. — A great deal of sickness is prevalent throughout the district at the present time, old and young suffering alike. I am pleased to say that no ill effects are reported so far.
