LAND AND WATEB
Eight day* of - the fishing season have now passed over (says the Hot "Lakes Chronicle of Saturday), and from a gentleman qualified to judge we learn that the catches cadi day have been unusually lnrge. /It is computed that fully 300 fish have been taken from the lakes and streams daily since the opening of the season, and from the quantity sent away by each morning's train w© should say that this number is well within the mark. Taking the fish at an average of 3lb each, w-hieh is not an over-estimate, should the name number be secured each day until the end of the season, and of the same average weight, there will have been removed over 70 tons of trout from the lakes and 6treams around Rotorua. That this is nob an exaggerated estimate may be gauged from last •eason, when there were t known to be quite 50 tons of fifth caught, while in addition to this the Maoris caught thousands of fish of which no record was kept.
