THE DOMINION IN LONDON.

EFFETE AND EXPENSIVE REPRE- ' SENTATION. '(Fsou Oux Own Cobrispondikt.)

WELLINGTON, November 14

There has been a good deal of talk in the lobbies about a return which has been laid upon the table of the Legislative Council, on the motion of the "Hon. T. Kennedy Macdonald. The return gives particulars of the staff «nd salaries of the High Commissioner's office in London. The aiaff consists of 28 members, and the three highest salaries are those of the High Commissioner (£2OOO a year), Mr W. Kennaway (£800), and Mr- H. C. Cameron (£425). It is stated that five of the memben of the staff, exclusive of the High Commissioner, have been in New Zealand. The total oc«t of the High Commissioner's office, including the salary of the High Commissioner and any allowances or otherwise paid to him, including travelling expenceA for the year ended March 31, 1907, Is set down as £9032.

Mr Macdonald intends to pursue the subject further. He is of opinion that the officers in question should have a personal knowledge of the Dominion, and that there should be a rotation of officers between Wellington and London. He also suggests that the office should be removed from Westminster to the City of London, and that the High Commiesionership should not be hekl by one gentleman for a longer period than five years. Mr Macdonald will ask the Council to affirm these views, and he has given notice of motion accordingly.
