INVERCARGILL COMPETITIONS.

INVEROABGILL, September 17.

' The Invercargill Competitions were opened in the Victoria Hall yesterday afternoon before a fairly large audience. The gathering thie year ie, in point of entries, the most successful yet held by the society, the number being 30 in exoesa of last year's total. The Mayor (Mr W. B. ficandrett), in an introductory apeech, spoke highly of the objects of the society in promoting & spirit of emulation amongst the young people, and the healthy influence of the competitions on the community. The Competitions will be continued every evening until Friday, when * demonstration by prize-winners will be given. Following are yesterday's and to-day's results: —

Recitation (" Th» Victim ").— Mu» Delamwe Brent (Winrton) 1, USm A. Prillo (Invercargill) 2, Miss J. M'N«ughton (Gr«6nhills) 3. Twelve competitors. The judge (Mr A. H. Burton) complimented of their performances. He Had gome difficulty in deciding the winner, and had to call on several of the competitors to repeat their pieces. Debate (parties of two) : "Is Disarmament Feasible."— Metars Hall and Lowden (261 points) 1, Messrs Toshach and Lister (207 points) 2. Two entries.

Two entries. September 18. The Invercargill competitions were con« tinued in ihe Municipal Theatre this evening before a large audience. The principal item on the programme was a grand church choir contest, in which five choirs competed. The contest pieces were: Anthem, 'f By Babylon's wave" (Gounod), and gfee, " O lovely May " (German). A male quartet competition, for which there wore five entries, was also held, but only two quartets came forward. At the conclusion of the choir competition tibe contest anthem "By Babylon's wave-" was rendered by the massed choirs under- the baton of the musical judge, Mr H. Wells.
