CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS.
CHRISTCHURCH, July 19. There is as yet no improvement in ilhe wheat market, 1 though it wae thought that in the event of no alteration being proposed in the duty on wheat and flour, millers would T» more encouraged to operate. Two small sales are reported — one of a mixed line of 1000 bushels at 4s 4d, and the other of 800 bushels of Hunters at 4e 3d .at country station*. There is no change in oats or oat sheaf chaff. The increase in the duty on potatoes hae not had. the effect that might have been anticipated owing to a larger quantity being offered locally, and Tasmanian quotations being lowered. Prices have come down instead of going up. Buyers are now offering only £3 6s at country stations. A farmer, who has just returned from a visit to Tasmania, saye that on the Davenport and other wharves there are thousands of bags of potatoes awaiting shipment. The crop has been an exceptionally heavy one, and, owing to "there not Deing » very nctiv-e demand in Melbourne or Sydney, the New Zealand Biarket has been an important outlet.
