At the Magistrate's Court on the 17th Jas- I Rowen, who was arrested at Sydney, was committ-ed for trial on a charge of quitting New Zealand and taking with him part of his property whilst being an undischarged bankrupt. ' The Empire Box-making Company's factory in Adelaide road was destroyed by fire on the 17th inst., and mantelpiece works adjoining were scorched. tory, which was destroyed by fire on the 16th inst., was insured for -JSBSO in the United the stock for £4075, as follows: " £1500 in the State office, £875 in the Royal Exchange, £1000 in the New Zealand, and jB7OO in the United. - The trawler Nora , Niven arrived from. Lyttelton on the 19th, having been engaged in trawling experiments along the coast. She had some satisfactory hauls at various points. Two youths (William Ingram and John Burborough) were dealt with under the Probation Act by Mi Justice Button on the 20th inst. for forgery and breaking and entering respectively. Leonard Lysll, a young- man, for breaking and entering at Dannevirke and robbing hie employer, was also admitted to 'probation for 18 months, conditionally on the balance of the money being- refunded and costs paid. Herbert Simpson, on a charge of theft, was admitted to probation for two years, on condition that he abstained from drink" and refunded the money. Burglars have been at -work here during the past week or two. The houses of Messrs G. Fitzgerald. L. Blundell, and T. 6. Maoarthy (all well-known citizens) have been broken into and gold watches, valuable jewellery, money, and silver plate etolen.
