STEAMER ON FIRE
PUT INTO FREMANTLE,
FREMANTLE, July 6.
The steamer Colonial, bound from Adelaide to Durban, ' put in to seek assistance to extinguish a fire in her lower fore hold. The fire was discovered yesterday morning, when the steamer was 50 miles west of Cape Leeuwin. The hatches were battened, and the Colonial headed for port? with all speed. The outbreak was supposed to be amongst the wheat. After a quantity of her cargo had been dis1 charged at the wharf, water was poured into the 10-<v-er hold to a depth of seven feet. It is bclievfd that the fire is now out. The Colonial's cargo is valued at J thiee-quprters of a mihion.
