SUGAR CONVENTION

DEBATE IN THE HOUSE OF

LORDS.

LONDON, July 5.

In the House of Lord 6 Lord Denbigh stated that the Government's denunciation of the penal clause of the Brussels Sugar Convention had Caused the abandonment of a movement to establish a sugar beet factory at Seaford, which would havo employed 120 men. Lord Lansdowne said the sugar-produc-ing colonies regarded the Government' 6 action with the profoundest dismay. If the British markets were reopened to bounty-fed sugar the keystone of the convention would be withdrawn.

Lord Fitzmaurice declared that the abolition of the cpnvention 6y&tem and tlie free introduction of sugar would provide more employment than any artificial arrangements.
