BENNET'S PATENT BOOT COMPANY.
The annual meeting of Bonnet's Patent. Boot Comnany was hold in Mr W. E. C. Reid's office on the 27th inst. Mr Walter Hialop (chairman of directors) presided, and there were eight other shareholders present.
The Chairman stated that it was with regret that he had to inform shareholders that the negotiations with a local firm for placing boots with the patent on the market had fallen through. Mr Bennet had! been sant to Christchurch to endeavour to make some arrangement 1 ? there, but he had been unsucc*p«ful. Arrangements wero then made with Mr Bennet for manufacturing patent heels. The necessary machinery had been purchased, and a suitable plao9 for carrying on work had been swurud; Unfortunately. Mr Bennet had been unable to obtain any orders from tho trade, the price being considered too hiph. Are extraordinary meeting would be helrl at the close of th<* annual mooting, and an offer from Mr Bennet for the purchase of the property would be submitted. Thn Chairman then moved that the report anrf statement of accounts as at Jane 11 br> adopted. Thr? statement of accounts showed a credit balance of £2 13s 2d in the bank.
The motion was seconded by Captain Sundstrum, and adopted after considerable discussion.
Mr A. Anderson, th<* retiring dirpctor. was re-elected, and Mr James Brown was reappointed auditor.
An extraordinary meeting of shareholders was then held. At the request of the chairman the Secretary read Extracts from the minutes of the directors' meetings referring to Mr Bennet'e offpr to purchase the patent rights, goodwill, plant, and machinery for the sum of £50; Mr Bennet to forsro his claim for wages, amounting to £30. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Wood, it was decided, by 5 votrs to 4, that Mr Bennet's offer be accepted. It was then decided, on the motion of Mr J. Brown, seconded by Mr Arkle, that, tho company be wound up voluntarily. and that Mr W. E. C. Reid be appointed liquidator at a fee of £10 10s.
The ravages of that pest the phylloxera have cost France 1,900,000 acres of vineyards.
