SALE OF FAT BULLOCKS.
One of the biggest transactions in prime fat bullocks that has ever been made in Southland was put through last Monday by Eafescrs Wight, Stephenson, and Co. (Ltd.), when they so.d to Mr W. W. Duke, butcher, George street, two mobs comprising 285 head. Owing to the poor turnip crop in Otago and Canterbury prime bullocks are exceedingly scarce this winter, and wellfinished lines cannot be got in either of these provinces. As a consequence, leading meat salesman who must have. prime quality cattle to conserve their tsade are compelled to go farther afield than usual for their winter supplies. Mr Duke has gone first, and has bought the pick of the fat cattle in the whole of Southland, his purchases being made from the well-known feeders, Messrs W. R. Beird (Toi Tois Estate) and F. A. Price (Wa'ikiwi). The cattle are all beautifully finished, heavy, well-bred shortljorn and Hereford cross steers, and Mr Duke has undoubtedly secured, by his foresight and enterprise, a supply of the best quality beef to fill his requirements during vie winter and early spring, when everything points to well-finished bullocks being practically unobtainable.
