LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.

PIAKO SWAMP TO BE DRAINED. WELLINGTON, June 17. The Government has adopted a comprehensive scheme for the drainage of the Piako Swamp, between Thames and Waikato. Tb.3 sum of £6000 will be placed on the .Estimates as the first instalment of money required to carry out the scheme. It is proposed to start operations in September next. Areas are to be set apart for flax cultivation, and the balance of the land will be drained. All will be available for settlement.
