WINE ADULTERATION
PARIS, June 11. The municipalities of Narbonne, Mont- - pellier, and Perpignan have resignedowing to the refusal *of th© Government to yield to the demands of theN peasants for legislation against the adulteration of wine. Ther« has been serious* rioting at Montpellier in connection with the agitation . , for legislation against wine adulteration, and the cafes were sacked. A troop of cavalry and a company of infantry quelled ; the disturbance. Sixteen arrests were made. June 12. M. Caillaux (Minister of Finance), during a discussion on the Wine Bill, advir»ed wine-growers to combine for a regular output, to abolish wine of an inferior quality, and to assist in the suppression of adulteration. He offered to forgo tho 1 land tax for five years in tbe case of vineyards placed under other crops. Twenty-five municipal bodies have resigned. June 13. Eight other municipal bodies have resigned, as a result of tie agitation over " the Government Wine Bill. M. Clemenceau holds that the resignations are irregular, as they" require a month's notice, and therefore the municipal authorities are personally liable for any damages caused as a consequence of tho stoppage.
