ESCAPE OF PRISONERS.
SHORT-LIVED FREEDOM.
CHRISTCHURCH. February 8.
Two prisoners escaped from the Lyttelton Gaol yesterday. It is presumed they broke into a store on Lincoln, road last nitrht and stole clothes and provisions and a bicycle. Two suits of convicts' uniforms were found at Opawa this morning. The two prisoners. Robert M'Carthy and Steven Maxwell, who escaped from the hard-labour gang at Lyttelton yesterday afternoon, were captured near Weed on". in the Ellesmere district, by Constable Mayne and two warders this afternoon. They were found to be wearing clothincr similar to that stolen from a store on the Lincoln road- On being discovered they made off across country, each going in a different direction, but eventually they surrendered.
