HOUSING THE WORKERS.

AUCKLAND, February 15

At the City Council meeting last night the mayor submitted, a lengthy report on the scheme for the housing of workers in proximity to the oitv. He favoured a scheme involving wholly municipal capital expenditure, and the erection of houses of brick at an estimated cost of £430 for foxjrroomed cottages and £480 for five-roome<l cottages, inclusive of the cost of land, to be rented the former at 9« to 10s, and the latter at 10s to lls. He recommended that in the first instance £20,000 be borrowed, which would enable at least 40 houses to be erected. The council resolved that w ith a -view to obviating the danger of thegrowth of slumps in Auckland, and providing suitable dwellings for a section of the community whose wants were not supplied in any other wav, the scheme brought forward by- the mayor be referred to the Finance Committee^ for its consideration and report.
