OTAGO LAND BOARD
The usual meeting of the Otago Land Board, { held on th«42th, was attended by Messrs D. | Barron (Commissioner of Crown Lands), W. Dallas, J. Tough, G. Livingstone, and J. M. M'Kenzie. Messrs Morgan and Joseph applied for the right to cut flax on Taieri Island, at Taieri Mouth. — Referred to ranger for report. Ranger O'Neill reported that Mercy Bellamy, lessee of section 20, block VIII, Glenkenich district, was not complying with the improvement conditions fo her lease. — Lessee to show cause why her lease should not be forfeited j for non-compliance with conditions. The Clerk Clutha County Council requested that land fund to the amount of £49 2s lid, lying to the credit of Tuok's road, be transferred to credit of Upper Hunt's road. — To be informed that the board would have no objection provided the contributing settlers agreed. ' Milne, Findlay, and Neill, on behalf of G. L. Tacon, requested that hi 9 land, held under occupation-with-right-of-purcha&e' license 364 Martin's Bay district, be brought under " The Bush and Swamp Lands Settlement Act, 1903." — Declined. C%leb Dungey's application to purchase an unsurveyed area in block I, St. Bathans district, was declined. David Wilson's application for an occupation lease in block X, Leaning Rock district, was granted, subject to survey, rent to be fixed when plan received. Ranger O'Neill reported thaf. David Kirk, lessee of village homestead section 18, block VIII, also of section 18, block VIII, Gl«nkenich district, was not effecting the required improvements. — Lessee to shpw cause why leases should not be forfeited for non-com- | pliance with conditions. - ' . A report was received from the warden on the application of William Harley for an occupation lease o,n Run 226 c, block I, St. Bathans district. — Granted for an area, subject to survey and conditional on the present lease being jsurrendered. The Warden reported on the application of^ Robert Cotton to pucrha-9© an area of two** acres in block XIX, Tuapeka East district. — To be offered at auction, burdened with valua- , tion for improvements, subject to the consent of the Minister. _ M. Harliwich applied for two acres in block 11, Teviot district. — Yearly license granted at a rental of 5s per annum and subject to a right-of-way through land and the right to County Council to remove gravel. The Warden reported on the application of Messrs Auld and Pink for parts of section 31, block XXXIII, Havelock town (cash purchase). — To be stirveyed and offered for sale, burdened with valuation for improvements. Applicants to pay cost of survey. James Truesdale's application for a leasein -perpetuity over section 42, block 111, Lauder district, was declined. John Collings's application for an occupation lease over 100 acres in block I. St. Bathans district, was granted subject to survey. Edward Gray was granted a grazing license over section 5, block XIII, Pomahaka Downs Estate, for six months from March 1; rent £5. D. Fin lay son applied on behalf of Mrs Sarah Neilaji to purchase section 83, block VI, Tuapeka West district, held under occupation lease 123. — Declined. Alexander B. Armour requested that part of Run 227 a (Home Hills) be offered under pastoral license for a term of 14 years. — Declined. Thomas M'Elwain was granted authority to occupy a small area on the Heriot Creek, town of Heriot, during the pleasure of the board. It was decided that section 12, block VIII, Woodland district, be reopened for selection ; capital value 10s per acre; valuation for improvements £21. J. C. Arbuckle, on behalf of Messrs Leslie and Buchanan, applied for flax-cutting rights on Tuapeka Commonage and run 494. — Declined. Ranger O'Xeill reported with regard to the improvements on section 42, block IV, Glenoamaru district. Thomas Wilson applied for a grazing right over the section. — Section to be reopened for selection, with valuation reduced to £60; rent 20s; Wilson granted grazing right for two months. Lee and Grave, on behalf of Messrs R. H. Ward and A. A. Ward, applied to purchase an area of land adjoining Ardgowan Estate, block I, Oamaru district. — Portion near applicant's house to be offered for sale, subject to survey ; capital value £20 per acre ; survey fees to be paid by applicant, and balance of the land to be- granted under miscellaneous license. It was decided that Walter Hughes, lessee in perpetuity of allotment 3a, Janefield Settlement, be required to show cause- why lease should not be forfeited fox non-compliance with conditions. The following applications were approved of: — Application for rural land on lease-in-perpetuity: Sections 28. 29, and 32, block VI, Clarendon district — George Coutts. Application for rura.l land for cash : Section 27. block V, Table Hill district— Mary Douglas Flett. Application for a worker's dwelling: Allotment 19, Windle Settlement— Albert Otago Fountain. Applications to purchase land now held under perpetual lease were dealt with as follows: — Pastoral lease 633, section 7, block L Martin's Bay district— John F. Ranger Atkinson reported on the application by George Philpot for a water frontaga to his section (5), Maerewhenua Ectate. — To be granted a license over an acre in southwest corner of the land held by Mrs BeUf under license, and to make own arrangement* with County Council as to right-of-way along roadline; rent of license 5s per annum. The trustees of the Kyeburn Public Library applied for an area of one acre on Run No. 211, Naseby, as a site for a public hall.-— Area to be set aside for purpose, mentioned under " Public Reserves Act, 1881." Alexander Graham, who had been called) upon to show cause why his lease in perpetuity over section 36a, Windsor Park Settlement, should not be declared forfeited for; his non-compliance with the residence condition, was granted exemption from residence for three months. The Town Clerk, Dunedin, . forwarded ant application to purcnase an are* of from 60 to> 100 acres, block VTII, Waipori district.— Ta bo forwarded for Minister's approval. Buddicomb for a license ta occupy an area fronting sections 71, 72, andl 73, block VII, Town district.— Application was declined. » M. G-illigan applied for license to oocupy the- northern part of section 41, Maerewherita Estate.— Granted at"" rent of 10s per annum ranger to fix boundary. D. Tilson applied for a license to occupy sections 1 to 7, 18 and* 20, block I, town o£ Molyneux. — License granted; rent 2s 6d pen annum. Application for rural land and lease vet perpetuity was granted James Cunningham; over section 113, block I, Leaning Rock district. Two members of the Land Board were appointed, along with the commissioner, Iq g3 over the various subdivisions of the Blackstone Hill runs and fix the rentals.
Word received from rMount Cook on" Tuesday (says the Timaru Herald) stated* that Dr Teichelman, the Rev. Mr Newtony and Mr A. Graham returned from the West Coast on Thursday last, coming over the \ Pioneer Pass to the Ball Hut. They succeeded in getting .to the top of three fine mountains which are said not to have'beea climbed before. The mountains scaled were Douglas Peak, Glacier Peak, and Gray'a Peak, the two former being more than) 10,000 ft in height. Mrs Thomson, of Greymouth,' climbed the Hochatetter Dome, 9258 ft, on Thursday last.
