RACING IN NEW ZEALAND
TUAPEKA RACES. JFsoit Ova Special Repob.te».l
Fibst Day — Wednesday, Febecaet 13.
The Tuapeka County Jockey Club commenced its annual meeting to-day in oppressively warm weather. There was a fairly good attendance, but not up to what has been present in previous years. The club used its new course at Happy Valley for the first time. The new track is a little over six furlongs in circumference, and is banked at the turns. The going is perfectly level, but, owing to the continuous dry weather, the course is at present carrying very little grass. A natural stand is formed by a hill, and in good time the club should be in possession of a course which will be a distinct improvement on tb© old track. In the opening event Skookum fell and brought down Last Ensign, but, although a cloud of dust enveloped the horses an} obscured the view, the mishap was evidently not the fault of the track. During the day the sum of £1008 was put thiough the totahsator, which was £258 above last year's figures. Details: —
