HERIOT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE.
The ceremony of laying the foundation ■stone of the above-named church took place on Thursday, 7th inst. By 3.30 p.m. there was a large gathering from the districts of Dunrobin. Edievale, Crookston, Tapanui, Glenkenieh, Kel6o, and Heriot. Fully over 150 people were present, when a neat programme was begun with the singing of Psalm C. During the ceremony selections from Church Praise and hymns were sung at intervals. The speakers were Rev. Messrs Jupp (minister of the parish), Waugh (minister of Tapanui), and Collie (minister of Dunrobin), whose addresses were much appreciated. The foundation stone was laid by Mr Wm. M-Kay, of Park Hill. Mr Sa-lmond. the architect, presented Mr M'Kay with a handsome and rich memento of the occasion — a silver trowel inlaid in greenstone and suitably inscribed. Mr M'Kav thanked Mr Salmond most heartily, and said the gift would be an heirloom wh\ch would be handed down to noeteritv. After the presentation Mr M'Kav laid the foundation, decla-rinc it well and truly laid. The 1 stone, which i= a very handsome one, is the gift of Mr A. Ross, contractor for the work. On ii arc enprraved the name* of Mr M'Kav. the architect, and the builder, and the year and date. Tea and eatables were provided by the la-dies of the congregation, and handed round. The building is a brick one. and the bricklayers are at work and good progress is being made. It will be an ornament to the district when finished.
