WOODSIDE.
February 14.— 0n Friday last the West Taieri School picnic was held in Mr Gow*s paddock, kindly lent for the purpose. The day was beautifully fine, an ideal one fox a day's outing. Harvest operation* interfered" _ somewhat with the attendance. However, bj the afternoon a fine gathering had" assembler to take part in the pleasant proceedings. Aa usual, the School Committee had everything in perfect order, and it is to be commended for the excellency of the arrangements during the day. A programme of r*o«sr for the children was successfully carried oat, and the uaua.l games filled up the rest of th<» t.me. Under the trees social chat was- the order of the day, and as the sun's rays were somewhat fierce at times, a goodly number were usually found there. Altogether, the picnic was a moat enjoyable one. and aJI went home in the evening well satisfied with the. outing. The Ci ops.— Harvesting is proceeding- apace-, and will soon be over. In mist case* thresnmg is simply a matter of a few hours. Some of the crops are turning out better than was expected, but the yield of oats- ia reckoned to average 10 bushels an acre less than usual. The Weather —A thunderstorm .ast Sunday evennv broke over the district and brougn* n'uch-needod and welcome rain. Scarcely half an inch fell, yet it was sufficient to replenish the empty tanks and put » green tinge on the burnt-up paddock*. This is th« first rain of any consequence this year.
