Dr Pomare, Native Health Officer, em« phatically and absolutely denies the statement in the Press Association telegram of Friday last that he telegraphed to the Native Minister suggesting thai the Natives should be allowed to have liquor at tho tangi on tho late chief Tohu. He has always endeavoured to put down the intemperate- use. of alcohol among his people. The Parihaka people were against the use of liquor \t the tangi, with the exception of two, who telegraphed to the Minister while Dr Pomare was in Wellington. The Hon. Mr Carroll replied that the " wellspringe of sorrow were too sacred to bo ' adulterated with such vile stuff as liquor."
