AUSTRIAN'S' CAMP WASHED AWAY.
THREE MEN MISSING.
AUCKLAND, February 16. A report from Great Barrier states that the floods this week overwhelmed a hut occupied by Austrian gumdiggers, three of whom "Here washed away, and, it is feared, ' drowned. One man escaped. The camp was pitched on the bank of a erotic on the ' island, between Blind Bay and Whakapara. The creek rose very rapidly as the result of the downpour on Wednesday and Thursday, and undermined the camp, which, without warning 1 , was engulfed in the swollen torrent. Four Austrians were in the camp at tho time, and all were precipitated into the stream. Three were carried away, and it is feared they were drowned. The fourth managed with difficulty to reach the bank and struggle out. He mad© a rapid and diligent search for his companions, but without success. He then -went to Blind Bay, where ho saw Constable Johnson, who organised a search party in the hope of finding some of the unfortunate men still alive. j ~ DARGAVILLE, February 16I There are- numerous washouts on the I Kaihu line, and portions are submePgeo. Train communication is still suspended. The town bridge at Kaihu is badly damaged and the Pangatororia. wharf has been carried away. Considerable damage has been done at the Tut a woe bush workings.
