THE AUSTRALIAN MARKET.
The Sydney Morning Herald of February 9 reports as follows: — The tea. market was active and firm, private sales including 150 chests Indians at 6£d to 7d, 150 packages Gey lons and Indians at 8d to Is, 235 Ceylons at Bld to Bd, and 100 Ceylons up to lO^d per lb. Messrs H. W. Carey and Co. offered at their saleroom yesterday 585 packages Ceylon tea, just landed. on account of Messrs Gibbs, Bright, and Co., and 110 packages Indians on other accounts. They report having sold 500 packages Ceylon to fair competition at full prices. The Indians did not realise the vendors' limits, and were for private treaty. Ceylon fanmngs sold up to 7^d per lb, pekoes and orange pekoes 7|d to Bid per lb, broken pekoes and broken orange pekoes up to 9id per lb. The Argus of the Bth inst. reports:— A fair business has been done, covering 220 packages Ceylon at up to 9d, and 100 packages In<K»n up to 7d. The Colombo market shows strength.
