NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWING.
WAIROA, February 1. An accident at Waik»remoaoa nearly resulted in the drowning of Mr W. A* Neale. A launch was returning from th.o daily trip round the lake and was loade« with tourists. It stopped at Wharem* Point to pick up some rowing boats. M* Neale, residing at Tapui, Waikaremoan?* and Mr Harry Bowen, of Hasting?, volunteered to fix up the boats for tbfc launch to tow. In going to Neale'a Assistance Bowen stepped on the nose of » boat, and his leg fouling on a rope caused him to collide with Neale. The sudden impact threw both into the lake. Th» launch, which was travelling nine miles aQ hour, circled round and picked up Bowen, who quickly threw a lifebuoy to Neale, and swam to his assistance. Neale wot weighed down by heavy clothing, and could make little headway. The minnow attached to his fishing-rod had caught ol> his back and the line entangled his body. Bowen passed the buoy over his head at» assisted him to the side of the launcjj^ and ho was then dragged on board insepfiible. Bowen effected the rescue undef difficult circumstances.
