MESSAGE IX A BOTTLE.
Tmou Oxrm Otnr Couwonnr.) CHRISTCHTJRCH, February 6
With regard to the Melbourne cablegram stating that a bottle thrown from the Antarctic ship Discovery in December, 1903, has been washed ashore in the vicinity of Cape Schanck, Mr Reginald Ford, of Christchurch, who was one of the staff of the Discovery, writes to the Press that " unless the date is incorrectly stated the message in fbe bottle must be another of those bottle jokes which some foolisa people are frequently playing. On December, 1903, the Discovery was fast i'ozen in the ice, separated 6ome 30 or 40 miles by an unbroken sheet of ioe from the nearest open water. In December, 1902, the conditions were similar. Tho • hrower must have had a long arm. I have no knowledge of any sealed bottle containing a- dated document being thrown overboard from the Discovery at any time during her voyage.' -
