M.C.C. v. OTAGO

VICTORY FOR THE ENGLISHMEN.

The second match between the eleven representing the Marylebone Cricket Club and an eleven from Otago was commenced on the Carisbrook Ground on Friday morning. The ground was in perfect order. The weather wa3 favourable, though a stiff wind blew across the ground nearly all the day. It did not interfere to any extent, however, with the play. The attendance of $he public was meagre.

Johnson captained the visitors and Wilson the local team. The former won the to=s and elected to send his men to the w lckots.

The Englishmen lost no time in commencing to score. Johnson and Fox, who were the first to appear for them, treated tho bowlincf" with groat freedom, and raitlcd up 139 before the former was disposed of. Harrison had not been at the wickets long before Fox was disposed of, with the toral at I<>s. Burns had only a short life. He made four singles, when Arstin lowered his stumps. Page and Harii«on were associated for a considerable time. both, scoring freely, notwithstanding several changes in the bowling. Page was caught after compiling 55. Douglas then joined Harrison, and the score was carried to 332 when Harrison was c;iu<rht after making 105. His score included 20 4's. Branston, who was expected to mike a biff score, was caught when he had reached 14. Simpson-Hay-ward and Douglas made things lively again for the Otago tea-m, who were kept running to all parts of the ground. Douglas was caught, off Austin's bowlmgr. when he had made 55, and Curwen, who followed, did not have a long life. Tufnell joined Simpson-Hav-ward, who was shortly afterwards smartly stumped by Williams, off Siedeberg's bowling-. May, the last man, played out time with Tufnell. The Otago bowling was good, but it was a batsman's wicket. The fielding of the local team was praiseworthy, considering the great strain upon them.

Austin obtained four wickets for 143 runs, Fisher three for 134. Siedeberg one for 40. Graham one for 55, Mackersy none for 67, Beale none for 25, and Wilson none for 9.

The wiokets fell in the following order: 1 for 139. 2 for 145. 3 for 155, 4 for 273. 5 for 332, 6 for 36?, 7 for 417, 8 for 423, and 9 for 476.

SECOND DAY'S PLAY.

The match was resumed on the Carisbrook Ground on Saturday morning. The ground was in splendid order. The weather was pleasant, though a stiff wind blew over the ground all the day. The atien^rvce of tlio putlio was largo in tho afternoon.

Tufnell and May. the not-out men of the previous day, did not add many runs io the visitors' already hugh total. With the soore at 496 May was caught by Ackroyd, off Austin's bowling-, azid the innings elo?ed.

Wilson and Austin were the- first to appear for Otago, but their partnership was dissolved with the ecore at 10, Wilson being bowled by Douglas. Ackroyd became associated with Austin, and the batsmen having a partiality for Simpson-Hayward's slows the score mounted rapidly until 90 was reached, when Branston was credited with Austin's wicket. Ackroyd and Siedeberg played very carefully, few runs coming- while they were at the w-ckete. At 116 Ackroyd was smartly caught by Tufnell. the wicket-keeper, who was ptanding far back to receive May's, furious deliveries.

Eokhold was nei.t man. When three runs had been added, Siedeberg was dismissed, gentling May nicely into Curwen's hands at extra-cover. Baker and Eckhold carried the score to 144 when the former was dimisscd, being caught by the wicketkeeper off Branston. Graham was dismiseied by Branston's first ball. Fisher assisted Eckhold to raise the score considerably. It stood at 211 when Eokhold was caupht off Harrison'e bowling. Fisher and Beal had been associated for only a few minutes when the former was caught behind the wicket«. Mackersy joined Beal, and the score went to 243, when Mackersy was clean bowled by Branston. Otago's total had now topped the previous highest score against the Englishmen— namely, 241 at Auckland, the same total being made at. ChrUlchurch. The rest of the innings did not last long, all the men being disposed of for 257. The total included 44 extras. 36 of this number being bye*.
