THE TURF.
Mr J. R. Crooke welcomdfi a large attendance at Aspendale Park on Saturday, when J. H. Davis (of Cambria House, Caulfield) produced a very promising two-year-old colt named Sleepy Jack, a hill brother to Baerami (Grafton — Tralee) Against 13 others in the Maiden Plate, of five furlongs, Sleepy Jack was backed down* to 5 to 2, a filly named Woodnymph, owned by J. E Stanley, likewise receiving such spirited B'upport as to cause her to figure on the 3 to 1 mark. The latter held such a commanding lead entering the straight that her victory appeared certain ; but the Sleepy one suddenly woke up, and came with such a. tremendous rattle as to land him a head to tho good passing the post, the time being lmin 4Jsec. The betting was 2 to 1 ea<:h against Pip 1?tonpans 9.0 and Firelight 9.9 against five others (including Tenakoe 8.9) in the Jumpers' Flat Race, of a mile and a-quarter ; but Prestonpans (who is a four-year-old gelding by Lochiel from Crossfire) won very easily by a couple of lengths from Sapir 8.13 m 2min 14Jsec, Firelight being third. J. better's four-year-old Thunderbolt — Da Capo horse Staccato 7.6 won the Aspendale Park Handicap (a mile) in lmin 451 sec, Brief
9.0 and EJ. 6 13 making a dead heat of it for second. W. Moffatfs Knugaratta (Kangaroo — Xann) 9 5 won the ■two-mile Steeplechase \eiy easily from Prob 9.11. Worarra 9.13, and seven more; whilst A. Wells's "Whirl 'by Chesternian— Frzzig) 8.7 put up a very taking performance by carrying off the Aspenda'e Plate, with a 71b penalty, from "fied Clover 7.2, Xarelle 7.4. and seven ethers, whilst
16\sec. A. W. Beazeley's Snvanak — Pigeon four-year-old Westeria 7.5 defeated Happy Pilgrim 6.7, St. Henry 8 2, and another baker's dozen in the AspencMe Purse, which occupied a secoid and d-half longer than the Plate. They had great sport at Rand wick on Saturday, "Will Kelso setting the ball rolling by annexing the Trial Stfikes with his Grafton — Fiancee three-year-old lhe Intended 7.9 (all-owed Tibl «. 10 to 1 chance, who downed the 7 to 4 favourite Automatic 8.7 by s-x length 5 !, the mile being tiaveTEed in lmin 41gec. The conditions of this Trial Stakes provided that three-year-olds should carry 7.12, four-year-olds 88, and five-year-olds and upwards 8.10, -winners after -entrance to carry a 101b penalty, whilst maiden three-year-olds at time of running were to be allowed 7lb aaid four-year-olds 10lb. The Challenge Stakes, of six furlong?, brought out a " kosher" field of a, dozen, tiLe betting closing — 9 to 4 Comatawah 7.2, 4 to 1 Metal Boy 8.1, 7 to 1 each Queenie's Court 7.4 and Arlington 8.9, 8 to 1 Harvest Lad 8.7, 12 to 1 each Isrisford 8.11, Jim Dorset 8 13, and Florance 6.11, 20 to 1 each Oakton 7i7 »nd Port Arthur 8.2, 25 to 1 North Head 8.6. Both Queenie's Court (Kingsley— Zebra> and Jim Dorset (Courage — Brunette) were penalised 71b for previous wins, but this did not prevent them finishing first and second, Queenie's Court romping home four lengths in advance of Jin? Dorset, who euchred Oakton out of second money by half a length ; Comatawah being close trp, fourth, and the time lmrn 14Bec. Queenie's Court is the property of Mr E. T. Cohen ; Jim Dorset being owned by Mr A. M. Rouse. The Corinthian Handicap, of seven furlongs, bronght the Sew Zealand-bred sire Osculator (who gave Wallace snch a battle for the V.R.C Derby of 1895) into «\idence once more, his eon Attist Kelson (from Moresque), with 11.7, stalling off the favourite — Sir Roland 12.1 — and winning by a •neck; with Downfall 10.0 the nearest of half a score of others, the time being lmin Slsec. Albeit there were no fewer than a dozen and a-half of starters in the Nursery Handicap, the supporters of Ike Earnshaw's stable backed the Maltster — Loveloch filly Congfetti 7.0 down to 5 to 2 therefor, Skopera 7.0 bsing at 9 to 2, and another Maltster filly, Miss Maltstei (from. Mies Clieveden) 7.0. at 10's. At the half-distance the issue appeared to rest between Mr W. Brodie's Simile —
Pukaki filly Sun Gem 7.0 and MiEs Maltster,
till the favourite suddenly appeared on the scene, and with a paralysing run snatched a victory from Miss Maltster by a neck, Snn Gem being a length away, third, the time being lmin 3sec for the five furlongs, The field for the Anniversary Handicap narrowed down to seven, the four-year-old Niagara — Merveilleux gelding Arpgain 8.6 being favourite at 9 to 4, with Ossian 8.2 at 4's, Grafton Lass '8.3 at s's, and Vanadium 8.0 at 6's. Vanadium is a five-year-old horse by Rnssley from Crystalline, and belongs to Mr M. P. B. ChrisEan. The favourite was very prominent to the half-distance, where both Vanadium and Ossian headed him, the latter quickly deposing Vanadium of pride <rf place, until tie son of Rusaky came again most determinedly and won in the last couple of strides by half a neck, with Aragain. three lengths away, thiid; the mile and a-half occupying 2min 38sec. Lp.st year Ka-fDrpan won in 2min 35Jsec. 'Tnere was another great finish for the High-weight Handicap, for which 10 stilted, a fowr-year-old mare named Sweetness (by Lochiel — SUverhair) 9.10 being favourite at 5 to 2, Opkton 9.0 being at 7 to 2, and J. Mayo's Isisford 10's (Simmer — Isis) at 7's^ At the finish the judge experienced a diffi-^ eulty in separating Sweetness and Isisford, but declared in favour of the latter by a head, wi+h Oakton. half a length away,

Coniollv also annexed the A.N A. WeHer Puise (six furlongs, in lmin IGsec) with Rangatira (Gozo — Maori Queen) 9.2 — a neddy for whom lie gave 500 guineas as a yearling. This was Bftngatira's maiden victory.
