AUCKLAND. The Huia expedition will resume the jearch for the remainder of the treasure lost in the wreck of the Elingamite at Three Kings. A new diver named Potts hae been engaged, and 1 , in company with Captain D. M'Kenzie, of the Huia, and Captain Willis, Lloyd's representative, he left for Mangonui by the Clansman this evening to join the Huia. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Gas Company the report showed the year's profits to be £35,037, of which £27,845 is absorbed in dividends. The reserve fund totals £20,000, and the depreciation fund £10,000. , The quantity of gas sold showed an increase of 9.1 per cent, on that of the previous year. At the nautical inquiry into the accident to the barque Wai-iti it was found that the captain was guilty of an error of judgment in moving the vessel without the assistance of the tug, and in not taking steps to keep the ship upright when she took ground. The captain was ordered to pay the costs of the inquiry, but his certificate was returned. In & Teport presented to the Education Board to-day upon the qiiestion of making military drill compulsory in the schools the inspectors of the board stated that as much was being done in the way of giving instruction in military drill as could well be done, and that the act and existing regulations made sufficient provision for teaching the subject. The board decided to forward a copy of the report to the Education Department. A sixteen-year-old boy was among those ; charged with drunkenness at the Police Court on the 11th, and was made the subject of a prohibition order. When the magistrate (Mr Kettle) was reading him a lesson on the evils of strong drink, the youth, with the air of an old man, said, Find it rather hard to give it up at first, four Worship." Judgment was given at Waihi in the case »f the Mining Inspector versus the Waihi 3old Mining Company and John Henderwn, assistant engineer, for alleged negli- ■ jence in cutting off air from the air com- j pressing engine, thereby causing the death if a miner and serious injury to another. ! Both defendants were convicted of negiijonce, and Warden Bush fined the com- ' jany £5 and Henderson £15, with costs, 86 each.
