TARANAKI.

Owing to heavy rains during the past three days, combined with heat, there has been great development of blight. Potato fields hitherto considered clean are now badly affected in the- Eltham district. The recent drought has scarcely affected the dairy industry in this district, as _is shown by the fact that the Eltham Dairy Company will pay suppliers £10,642 for iDecemiber, an increase of £753 compared ■with tho same month last year. The directors of the Taranaki Oil and (Freehold Company have engaged as manager Mr William Balloch, who has taken up his duties. Mr Balloch was for 20 years in the employ of a leading firm of artesian well borers in Great Britain, and also had considerable experience in petroleum operations in South Russia. He intends the company's bores to be much greater in diameter than those put down "by other operators. Special appliances have 'been cabled for to England. The annual report of the New Plymouth Harbour Board shows that the revenue last year was £11,859, being an increase of £2256. The imports and export* totalled 65,131 tons, being an increase of 2673 tons. The revenue has doubled since 1898. while the trade has nearly doubled. The board spent out of revenue last year £7223 on permanent extensions.
