NO-LICENSE IN OAMARU. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
OAMARU, January 11. The working: cf the no-license in this district naturally comes in for comment at frequent intervals, and some remarks made by the Oaniaru ilail last eveuing will be int.erosting to main who are watching the system carefully. The Mail remarks that no-licens-e worked well at the start, but admits the " unwelcome truth " that there ■ar-e leakages in the system of abolition which call for prompt and unbecoming police ' Scrutiny." Proceeding, the paper says there are certain sly proceedings in divers places which demand the investigation of those whose business it is to sec the law administered. "Virtual immunity from police interference has encouraged a ventureeomeness on the part of the drink worm which will go Xrom had to worse."' The Mail says the bead of this police district ■a/t Chr'sTchureh must be aware that it is folly to expect a man with a uniform on to contend with liquor offences. The figures published the other day are proof that drunkenness on the streets is exceedingly rare, but if rumour be correct there b> little doubt tfe<at a good deal of illicit selling is taking place.
