EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

The quarterly returns of attendance for tho period ended 30th September, 1906, which have been compiled by the secretary of the Ota go Education Board, show thafc' there were 229 schools in operation in this district, employing 206 males and 321 female teachers. The number of pupils on the rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 19,159, and at the end of the quarter 19 158, comprising 9892 boys and 9266 girls. Tho average attendance was 8944- boys and 8269 girls, making a total of 17,213, being 65 less than the total for the previous quarter, and 137 less than for the September ruarter ISOS. The number of pupils admitted during the quarter was 911 boys and 786 girls,— to^al, 1697. Thef attendances at Oamaru were : North School, 317; South. 287: Middle, 253.
