OAMARU, October 9-
Tiie Papakaio tragedy still excites attention, and is a constant source of conversation.. A large detective and police force, including Commissioner Dinnie, is etill on the spot, and inquiries are being made very thoroughly. The impression is abroad that developments may ba -expected at any time, and this will probably turn out to be well-founded. The police are extremely reticent, and all information is refused to the press. The mysterious appearance of a sailor in the locality on the afternoon previous to the murder and his equally mysterious disappearance on the following morning, when he is believed to have been seen cycling rapidly from the scene of tho fatality, has caused some comment, and inquiries for him have- been made by the polica, but it may very possibly be found when the numrers go up that tho suspicions against that individual arc grouncl-le-3.
