With, the unwelcome intelligence that the Mo.yntyix River h-\<i risen during the week end from 4ft llin to sft 6in above the normal mark at Alexandra, to c'ond over dredging prospects, Monday's market cciikl hardly be expected to eliow business — and. in fact, it did not. Having regard to the advanced season there is a perfectly natural fear that the" river may now rise steadily to its ncrmal summer level, and, certain'y, the waters can hardly' be" expected io assuage as readily as they might art an earlier period. A rising river has always a. deadening effect on tile market in general, and generally brings about a decline in some particular stocks. The slocks most notnbly affected on Monday were Electric and Manuherikia. The buying quote of Electrics declined 2s as compared with the previous day, and ''lie selling quote 3s. The selling quote of Manuherikias declined 3s Cd, and even to the reduced quote there was no response. The prospects of -fhe company's dredgs being abe to continue operations are not br'ght.

The only business done vr'.s in Riley's Beaches, a parcel changing hnnds at Is in the morning. Quotations for the siock showed an advancement ever Saturday's rates. Central Charltcns were sought for. but the seller of tbe previous day did not diesloss himself. Charlton Creeks and Enterprises were touched on. • Xew Trafalgar and K-cw Perseverances were on offer. An offer was made for Otrgis. and Sandy Points were a little c_oi-ar. Shares (ex div.) in Talisman Consolidated were on offer at 30s 6d. and Nokomai Hydraulic stock ■was also offered. There wers buyers of the old issue of National Bank shares, and sellers of the new. New Zealand Paper Mil^s stock was touched on ; Xew Portland Cemsn-t was on sale; and fhere were buyers of shares in National Icsuranes and D.I.C. (ordinary).
