THE BRITISH NAVY.
A DANGEROUS ECONOMY
LONDOX, October 15. The Standard makes the startling statemant that the Admiralty, from motives of economy, intends before 1907 to place six of the Majestic class of battleships and two of tho Formidable class in reserve with the nucleus of their crews aboard, while eight of the Royal Sovereign class will be placed in reserve without crews. The men who will be liberated will go to strengthen the crews of the torpedo flotillas, and they will live in barracks.
Earlier newspaper statements indicated that some reduction in the strength of the Mediterranean fleet would be madeowing to the entente cordiale with France, but the drafting of vessels thence and elsewhere to Home waters was intended to strengthen the squadron. The Standard itself anticipates an official denial of its information, and a modification of the Government's intentions is now alleged.
