THE TROT OF BUTTER.
■OGGESTED AMENDMENT OF THE TARIFF. (Fxox On Owir CoßiasroimaT.) , WELLINGTON, Angnst 17. i The" labour people in Wellington, what witk dear potatoes, dear butter, and exorbitant house rents, are beginning to complain seriously. The Wellington Trades mod Labour Council has been discussing the uutter Question, and toe fact &*4< in 1838
butter was only 9sd per lb, whereas now it is* up to Is 4d per lb, has not escaped its attention. It has accordingly passed, the following resolution :— " That, owing to the exorbitant charges of the butter ring, which can only be maintained while the present duty of 20 per cent, is imposed on imported butter, the council advocates the abolition of such duty." The council coneiders that imported butter would fall under one of the n.o.e. duties- (20 per cent, ad valorem), and tnat if this duty wa« removed butter would come in at a lower price than is now being obtained for it. There is, however, no likelihood that Parliament this session will be asked to deal with the Customs tariff, except perhaps in regard to a very few items in connection with reaiprocal trade between Australia and New Zealand.
