STEAM SERVICE TO SOUTH AFRICA.
W*> TENDER ACCEPTED. WELLINGTON, August 10. Three tenders were received by th« Government from four shipping companies for regular services between New Zealand and South African ports. The tenders were £50,000 per annum for a six-weekly service, - £35,000 for a voyage every two months, and £27,500 was the lowest tender for a six-weekly service, coasistinv of one cargo steamer without refrigerating -space and two steamers -with refrigerating space. The Premier was of opinion that the prices were all too high, and beyond the means of the colony. In faot, s said Sir Joseph this afternoon, the tenders were higbor for the services to be performed than the price paid under the former contract (£30,000 per annum for monthly voyages). He thpught the needs of the colony would be fairly met by tho service which the Tyeer Company had decided to establish, as this included calls at South African ports. On the Premier's recommendation, at a meeting this morning, the Government decided to decline all the tenders.
