AUCKLAND.
A license to mine for oopper in the Woodvillo district was granted at the sitting of the Warden's Court to Joseph Thornes, Auckland. Tho locality is stated to be on Copper Creek or Fernicigh. The application was for 320 acres. Private advices from Home announce the death of the Hon. G. M. Waterhouse, a former Premier of New Zealand, at Torquay; aged 82. The deceased was also Premier of South Australia, and was said to be the only statesman who had held the Premiership of two colonies. In the Police Court on Wednesday two boys, under the age of 15, had a conviction recorded against them on charges of smoking cigarettes. Sub-inspector Gordon said that the habit had largely diminished since the passing of the act, but the V.M.C.A. had asked police assistance in checking the evil result smoking had on growing boys. The Education Board's solicitor advises that body that it is not legally justified in acting upon tho inspector's suggestion that the grading of teaohcre be printed in full, and that the document be communicated to teacher* for their information. He was of opinion that any teacher aggrieved by its publication would be entitled to go to the S-'uprcmo Court for an injunction, and would be sxiccessful. i The Zealandia, which left for Sydney this evening, took gold bullion and silver valued at £59.243. Jorcymo Furlonf-. a young man, wa_<s charged at the Police Court on Monday with attempted suicide. He admitted that he shot himself with a revolver, but stated that ho was trying the spring of the revolver when it exploded, and he got the whole charge in his neck. He said that the statement about a man having firod at him was' false, but denied any intention of artoinpting his own life. Tho case was disinii-ctl.
