Otago Championship. — The championship and handicap tourney in p regress at the Otago Club still continues to attract a good attendance of onlookers, who are usually found watching play at the boards occupied by some of the leading players. Occasionally the visitors take a hand at the game, some club member- being always ready to accommodate them. Visitors <. are always welcome at th* club, which mee^e on Wednesday and Saturday evenings in the clubroom, Maclaggan street, -opposite Universal Hotel. Mr Mulvey's "Theory of the Move."— Ths Leeds Budget, in its issue containing -he) third instalment of Mr Mulvey's treatise, reprinted from 'Otago Witness, says: — The series of articles on " The Move " now -appearing in our columns will be foqnd exceedingly interesting to the deeper students of our gam*. Mr Mulvey touches upon exceptional points not mentioned in the textbooks, and the numerous examples he gives help to make his exposition very clear and instructive.
Denvir v. Burns. — Writing us under date June 23, Mr J. T. Denvir, Chicago, U.S.A., encloses without comment f.n admission ticket for a draughts match, as follows: — " Admit one te tjie checker contest ai 20 games '^between John T. Denvir, of Chicago (champion checker player A the North-west), and P. H. Burns, of Joliet (champion checker player of Joliet). Tickets 60 cents."
A Well-known Problemist. — The famous " P. 8.," of problem fame, is Professor Peter Bennett, of the Technical College, Glasgow. He was recently on tour in the United States. The English Champion. — Mr J. Alexander, the English champion, who is secretary of the Birmingham Draughts Leagi.e, was, at the league's unnua 1 meeting, ©repeated w'th a handsome souvenir in the shape of a gold albert, and congratulated on his fine victory, and in recognition of the prestige his perform* ance had brought to the city. The Edinburgh Championship. — In the semifinal of the Edinburgh tournament, J. M'Kenzie beat W Jor-rJ&n bj 1 «••« «nd five draws, while W. Beattie put" out R. D. Scott by 2 to 1 and 1 draw. The final round resulted in a victoiy for W. Beattie. who scored 1 win and 3 draws from J. M'Kenzie. t'r-us winning t>he championship and gold medal. Mr H. F.
