OTAGO WEDNESDAY ASSOCIATION TEAM v. TIMARU.

A WIN FOR TIMARU.

Under ideal conditions and before & representative gathering- of spectators a match between Timaru and the Otago Wednesday representative team was played at Timaru yesterday. Timaru won the toss, and played with the sun behind them in the first spefl. Fpr a time Timaru were aggressive, bat when the spell was about half through Hilliker secured the ball on the line and transferred to Mills, who centred. Harrison conceded a corner in saving;, and 5 Grenfell, placing, a dropping shot in the goal mouth, gave Ross an opportunity of which he promptly took advantage, heading the ball through. Otago 1 goal, Timaru nil. Timaru began to open out, and before long they gave evidence of both combination and science. Though kept at bay by Ashton for some time, they eventually scored with a fast shot. Almost as soon as the ball was set in. motion again Timaru were awarded a penalty kick owing to an Otago player handling the ball. Harrison took the kick and sent in, a shot which Pickard had no chance of saving. Timaru 3 goals, Otago 1. It was thought that on changing ends Otago would assert themselves, but though they commenced the attack Timaru. soon took possession and held the advantage for the rest of the game. The final result was : Timaru ... 5 goals. Otago ... 1 goal.

The Timaru full backs (Harrison and Binning') played remarkably well, and the home team's forwards showed excellent combination. The halves were a good set, giving the forwards adequate assistance. The ohief features of the game from an Otago standpoint were the cool goal-keep-ing of Pickard,. the sound defensive play of Ashtpn, and the line play of Ross. Mr Tweedie controlled the game in a most satisfactory manner. The Otago players were entertained by the Timaru Club on Wednesday evening, when a couple of hours were spent in a very pleasant way. The toasts included " The Visiting Team " (proposed by Mr A. Budd, and responded to by the Otago captain), "The Otago Football Association" (proposed by Mr G. Waxriueton and

responded to by Mr Illingworth), and " Success to Soccer in the Schools."

Under the enthusiastic presidency of Mr Budd the game in Timaru has made great strides, and the raw team o£ three months a,so is now a finished combination capable of giving any representative Otago team a willing contest.
