NEW ZEALANDS IN AUSTRALIA,
The New Zealand brigade were out in force at Canterbury Park recently, as in addition to General Kurolri in the Hurdle Race they (says an exchange) started Chivalry in the Flying, and a bb T a< » of others— Savoury and Starehotrt — in the Canterbury Handicap. They were only successful with one. Starshoot. Chivalry let th«m down heavily in the Flying Handicap; for which he went out favourite an a field of 15 at 3to 1. Next to the favourite the most fancied was Passion, -a mare by Lennox from Ira, that has been racing in the northern districts. Well away with the favourite, Lady JHelena kept him hard at it all the way to the distance. When Chivalry shook, off the filly Passion came at him. and eventually won nicely by a length in record time for the course. The visitors, howevwr, made no mistake with Starshooi; in the Canterbury Handicap. The Hotehkrsa gelding received a lot of assistance from his stable mate Savoury, who was ridden by Price, Hewitt having the mount on the favourite, who waa very bad at fche post. H» was eventually allowed to go with practically a flying start, as Hewitt had takt>n him several paces behind the field, and the horse was fairly on his legs when trie barrier went up. Racing through the field — there were !£ '•taxters — Starshoot was taken to the front, and at oucfr took up inside position, shepherded by Savoury, who, racing with, him on the outeide, never allowed anything to interfere with, the chestnut throughout the journey. The favourite was never headed, and won nicely from Old Gold and Cairngorm. In this race Savoury and Starshoot were both in at the same weight. They are in the Epsom, with Starshoot giving Savoury a pound, and it is pretty certain that by the day Savoury will be quite the equal of Saturday's winner, who beat a fairish field, as it included Lucknow, Go Soon, Hercules. Tne Laird, Cryde, and Carolga. The Laird has now been given three run 3 since, he came down from Forbes, but he has done no good, and it is very evident that the hor«e hae not improved since he left Earnihaw'o stable, as many thought. j
