WINNING SIRE& EST AUSTRALIA.
Lochiel heads the list of winning sires in Australia with. £19,06* to his credit. This amount was- won. by 30£hoT9e», which scored in 98£ races. Many other New- Zealand horses figure in the list, but it is only a Tery few who are capable of taking such hign honours at the stud- as the son ot Prince Charlie, who has- proved himself one ot the best racehorses- and sires that Australasia has ever known. A remarkable thing about 1/oohiel's marvellous success at the stud ia that he should achieve his fame after he was condemned by an expert as being; unfit for stud .duty, and the- late Tom Hades, who was then starting a stud, sold the- Borse and made an extremely unlucky bargain, when, he did so. It is indeed unfortunate that this colony, where the '[ successful son of Prince Charlie first 3aw tfa& light of day, should possess so few of his stock. Prior to being sent to Australia, Loohiel left a few foals, and one of : them, ia Pibroch, produced Mensohikoff, • whose d«eda on fcbe turf are well known to \ those interested, in racing. Red Gauntlet ' is the best son of Lochiel we have, but he was bred in- Australia, whilst LafeesheJl, a son of Lochiel &n& Nautilus, has left a j winner or two. If the success of Loehiel's stock in- this colony is included, it brines his figures up to £21,432.
