WAIMATE.
August 3 — Public meetings are being held in various parts of the district, in support of the Waimate Hospital Separation Bill. The local hospital was built and equipped principally by money raised locally. At various times the South Canterbury Hospital and! Charitable Aid Board hits mn&e suggestions re tho Waimate Hospital — now to ma&e -it aa Old Men's Home, again * Hospital for Consumptives. Wairoate contends that a far greater sum is raised by this end of fhe district than is expended, thus benefiting the central hospital in Timsru. These appear ' to be Waimate's main grievances. Another burning question is the Representation Bil.. which has to do with the representation oJ' Waimate on the Timaru Harbour Bo*r«L The Waimfcte Inclusion Bill seeks to compel Waim&te to pay harbour rules. Waimate, it ap-
pears, is willing to do this if not made liaWe Fox money raised at a time when it was unrepresented on the Harbour Board. Timaru points out thai a very large amount of goods for Waimate merchants is landed in Timaru, and that, therefore, that borough should beai , part of the cost. Both these questions are lomewhaf beclouded by a warmth of the agitation, but the mam facts are as stated. Hunt Club.— The Waimate District Hunt Club hoe had several enjoyable runs lately — one to the property of Mr Rhodes, of Otaio, A second to Kapua, and on Tuesday a visil was paid to the property of Mr Geaney, of Makikihi. Water Supply.— The first instalment of the pipes the Waimate water supply ha 3 arrived. Borough Council. — Dr Barclay, having resigned his seat on the Borough Council, was requisitioned to reconsider his resignation binding he must seek re-election, he agreed to do this, but found himself opposed by Mr George uash, a late candidate for parliamentary honours. The contest was keen, about 800 votes being polled. Dr Barclay was reelected by a majority of 18.
