CLINTON.
August 6 — Slowly the winter is passing away in s-pite of the bad weather. Although we have not had a severe fall of snow this year, yet slight ialls have been almost of ■weekly' ociurrciic?, and if these weio all put toother it could fcafily be said that we hav.T had as much as last year. We have also had a lot of float. Farm work is well advanced. The lea has almost all been ploughed, and farmers are now stalling on the turnip land. Church Social —The annual soiree in connection wi.h the Presbyterian Church was held on Ti"day evening last, and proved a. great success. Th<j Rev. Mr Curric, Balclutha, and Messrs J and T. Taylor were th* speakers while a ftrong choir, under the leadership of Mr West, rendered a number oi anthems in capita l style. Solos were sung by Miss Caldef, Mrs Elliot, Mrs Dougla«, and Messrs P. Murray and West the latter also contributing two taking recitation*. Caledonian Society.— This society held its dinner on July 27, The catering v.as entrusted to Mr* M'Kcthrne, and. aa usua., great c-tti-iiaction was givsn. The function is arranged to keep membexfc together and to provide a little fun for tlicew who are kept hard at woik on the day of the sport?, and unable to enjoy themselves. After the dinner sv lengthy toast hat was duly honoured, and wah must:, soug, and story a very pleasant evening was spent. Farmers' Union.— The local branch of ths Farmers' Union met last week, and, amongst other things decided to hare a dinner for members. This will take place in the Railway Refieshment Rooms on August 23, School. — Miss King, who has been mistress in cwr schaotl for the last five years, bnt who has now resigned, was, oil the eve of her re-tire-men't, made the recipient oi several valuable presents.
