AUCKLAND.
The Morayshiro has arrived from Liver, pool with 133 immigrants, including 70 for Wellington. Joseph William one of the Devon's immigrants, who attempted to commit suicide soon after his arrival here, appeared before the Police Court on Wednesday. It was stated that he had a wife and family in ilngland, and wan not without friends in New Zealand, for there were persons in the court ready to look after hfoi? He was accordingly discharged. Replying to the magistrates, Webb said that he came to New Zealand on his own motion, having been advised by friends that there was plenty of work here for plasterers and bricklayers. These representations, he said, were not made by official persons. The Postal Department issued notices to all bookmakers on the Ist informing them that* their telephone communications would be cut off after the 30th September. This is understood to be a step in the direction of minimising the gambling evil. A rough estimate of the kauri logs brought- down to the booms during the recent rains is 10,000, of the value of about £100,000. . ' Further particulars in connection with the mysterious shooting affair which occurred at Newton on Saturday night show that James Furlong, 23 years of age, rushed into his mother's house saying he had been shot by a man whom he could not describe. Dr Davis, who examined Furlong, states that the bullet wound in .Furlong's neck is not a serious one, but it is evident that the weapon was held within a few inches of Furlong's throat. This does not agree with Furlong's statement that his «asailant fired across the street at him.
