The leguiar meeting of the Benevolent Institution Trustees, held on Wednesday, was attended by Messrs Talboys (chairman), Kempthorne, Gcur'ey, Ark!e, Burnett, ard Captain Easiher. Accounts amounting to £396 6s 10<! were passed for payment. The outdoor relief book showed that for July last the cases numbered 320 representing 144 men, 215 women, and 537 children ; averrge weekly cost i'lOJ Is 3d. For July of last ye-ar tho cas-ea numbered 326, and comprised 144 men, 222 women, and 535 children; average weekly cost being £103 17s 6d. A gift of books was received from Mr H. C. 800 l wil.h thanks. Tenders for the purchase of a small property at the North-East Valley were opened, and that of Mr J. F. Jones accepted. Thirty-eight applications for relief, six of which were made by Chinamen, were consideied. In connection, with one of the applications made by 'Jie Chinese, the applicant, a man rt over 70 years of age, was asked if he cou'.d live outside on 3s a week, but Mr Gourley interpo c ed that it was out of the question to allow a man like tha.t to sleep outside this weather. Mr Patterson, the interpreter, strongly favoured these old Chinese being shipped back to China, and said the interest on the noil tax of £100 would cover all cost of shipping siuoh men back to Ghu.a on their glowing old. Dr Truby King wrote in connection with a wompji, a patient at Seachff. visiting a sister who w«s in the Benevo'«nt Institution, and stated that the visit ccu'd be made provided the trustees paid all expenses, including th© payment of an attendant. It appears the sisters feel their parting acutely. The trustees decided to undertake the responsibility, and it was suggested that, should the experiment prove successful, the woman be retained at the institution as an inmate.
