TO THE SKYLARK SINGING IN WINTER.
Light-hearted lyrist of the summer eky,
Thou singest clear beneath the wintry cloud, Whiiat one who boasteth immortality Ben.ea.th the mortal lead is crushed and bowed.
O soaring lark! Thou art content to make
Clear melody despite the coming storm, Trusting tha.t by-and-bye the cloud will break. And all the fields be fragrant, bright and warm. ,
But, ah! this awful discontent divine
Hath never driven thee forth to famish where Sun over sun resplendently doth shine,
Or frozen tracts are desolate and bare.
Sing gaily on beneath the sullen cloud!
Remote, alone, the Great One keepeth still, Nor for himself in eullenness is bowed : He waiteth till the earth her term fulfil. — Charles Oscae Paxkxx.
Herbert, July 26.
