-Sectry cm outpost duty in the days of the Maori war was often attended with great danger, because the natives, generally more than half naked, and as silent as Red Indians on a trail, were lrequently able to crawl close up to the soldiers and tomahawk them without a cry being raised. In the instance depicted by the artist, however, the soldier has had his suspicion aroused, and, challenging the unseen foe, is ready to fire at the first sign of a head above the rocks.
