THE GAELIC SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the Gaelic Society was held on Wednesday night in the Oddfellows' Hall, Stuart street, there being a large attendance. The chief (Mr Dugald M'Pherson) presided, and was supported, by Chieftain D. Matheson, Mr John M'Donald (Palmerston), the Hey. D. Maclenran, and Mr Angus Cameron Robertson. A letter of apology from Chieftain D. Munro (Port Chalmers) for unavoidable absence was received. The Chief referred to the recent ceilidh, which was a very successful meeting socially and financially. Messrs A. C. Cameron and Alexander Cameron were elected members and their names added to the committee, 'and the Rev. Mr Maclennan was elected an honorary member and chaplain to the society. These gentlemen spoke appreciatively of the honour conferred on them.

The Chief, in his opening address, spoke in feeling terms of the irretrievable loss the colony had sustained in" the death, of the late Premier. Th« executive had wired their condolences' to the bereaved widow and family, and thy had received the following acknowledgment : — " D. M'Pherson, Esq., Chief Gaelic Society, Dunedin, — On behalf of Mrs Seddon, her family, and Government I tender you grateful thanks 'for sympathetic message of condolence in the great and irreparable loss we have all sustained in the death of our loved Premier and honoured statesman. His life wa3 a devotion to duty and the uplifting of humanity, while his tender sympathies and wide consideration endeared him to all. No act of goodness was too small for him to render, no effort too great for his \indertaking. His great work for this colony and the Empire will ever cause his name to be revered. — "Wit. HallJones."

Mr A. Cameron Robertson delivered a speech in eloquent, classical Gaelic, in which. he related a number of Highland stories such as were wont to enliven the fireside gatherings in the Scottish glens in times gone by to the evident delight of his audience

Mr John M'Donald (Palmerston) also gave a short address in. Gaelic and English. He remembered at the beginning of the society many years ago that 12 Highlanders cain& from PaJmerston, of which the late Sir John M'Kenzie was one. He was sorry to say that of that 12 mentioned only two now remained alive — viz., Mr Dugald M'Lachlan and himself. That was, so far as he remembered. He wa.s very pleased to be jpresent at this meeting (possibly for the last time, as he was now an old man, aud not in the best of health) and io see such a nice attendance. > He would advise them to stick to the Gaelic motto, '"Leaji gudlu ri cliv do slnnsir." Mr M'Donald concluded with a capital story of the prowess of the Highlanders in. the olden time. He waa very warmly applauded at the conclusion of his Vddress.

The musical part of tlie entertainment was most enjoyable. Mr M'Fadyen (bard) sang " Hug o lonau," and, being encored, "A. Mhairilaghach, " and. later on, " Chuir iad an t-suil a pilat ban." Mrs Cross sang " Our am folks," Mr E. E. Donaldson "Hear the pipers calling" (a new song), Miss M'Calhun the English version of " Ged tha mi gun crodh," Mr A. C. Robertson " Tlie emigrant's farewell," Miss M'Kuinon "Mo chiuinneag Ileach," Mr J. Davidson "Mary of Argyle." The choir (Mr J. Davidson conductor) sang " A cluinn a leannan " and Mhumuter a ghlinne so " (a lament), Pipemajoi M'Kechnie and Mr J. M'Donald discoursed the national music, and Miss Eeeve played the accompaniments. It was announced that preparations were afoot for the annual gathering, which would be duly advertised.

"WHY WASTE YOUR. MONEY?

If you have rheumatism, gout, or sciatica, it is useless to hope for a permanent cure from a liniment. You can expect, a-t the best, nothing but temporary relief. If you want to cure yourself you mu9t deal with the Cause, .vhich is uric acid in the system. Turner's Eiteumo achieves this object; it drives out the iiric acid, and all rheumatic or sciatic pains at once cease. Mr W. Oakley, painter, New Brighton, writes- —

1 I was suffering from a severe attack of rheumatic gout, and got a bottle of Reeuko. After a few doses I was able to shave myself, although before taking it I could not use a knife. I will never be without RjHtEtrMo for the future, and will gladly recommend it to my suffering friends." Sold everywhere 2s 6d and 4s 6d per bottle.
