OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP.
Tho -tournament for the championship of Otago is now in full swing, play being held at the Otago Club, Maclaggan street, every Wednesday and Saturday evening. Some competitors have not yet been able to make a start, but will do so thia week. In the first draw, Messrs Lucas and Borehaim were paired, and some interest was manifested in their play. In the first game Lucas, with Black, scored a win, the balloted opening being 9 13, 22 17. Their second game was a closely-contested dr.w. Langs-ton won his first gam© from Sinclair with the White side of 12 16, 24 19. Sinclair misled a nice draw at the finish, nfter pla-y-rag a, good game. The second game is yet t bo p!a.ycd. Saturday night should see several pair 3 concluded.
Fol tho '' ballot iag" the secretary has provided a, simple device, consisting of a. board with Iwo 7m circles, one circle having tte sev-en possible Black moves ranged equidistant round Ihe ring as on the dial of a clock, and the other ciicle having the possible White moves likewise. The spinning of a hand on *aoh dial determines the Black move and White reply respectively, and only occupies about 30 seconds or less. Visitor*, to the club are always welcome.
