SOUTHLAND NOTES.

My Southland correspondent writco from Inyercargill on June 20: — j At a meeting of officers held on a recent dale it was decided that *he presentation memento to Lieut.-colonel Henderson take the form of a Gniynor Clayton enlargement in oils of the recipient." The token is a substantial affair, and one that will at ali_ times commend itself to the late O.C. in the light and spirit in which it has been offered. Tb« Awarua Rifles* social, which was to have eventuated last Friday, has received an indefinite postponment owing to the death of the Hon. the Minister fo£ Dcfencsi

The company's Social Committee had gono to much that could be called hard endeavour wit') the idea of a thoroughly successful gathering, which efforts, however, are still in a etage of utility there being opportunity yet for the reunion of the corps and supporters. Mitch has been written, and little left t'xisaid, regarding Oie departure from this ; sphere of usefulness of .a man among men and a loader among the leading ones. In a practical manner :t: t is hoped members ol th© Defence Forces here as elsewhere will be asked to convey to future generations in rshaper s hape or form that they may decid-e the living greatness of our illustrious dead. To-morrow corps, in conjunction with {.heir respective bsnds, will parade for memorial service. In a double capacity the Voiunteors will mourn the Premier's death, for anait from their dutiee and actions as citizens, the lat-e Premier, as head of the Defence Department, in\ested much of his characteristic energy and exceptional talents in the interests of the Defence Forces. In such a measure have these controlling powere been applied that Ihe effect? are reflected among all ranks And in all branches. Th© general impression is that to-morrow's parade will bo a comprehensive one, and the citizen soldier, unselfish in the acceptance of his work as a defencler^of " God's own counrry," will, in the spirit that sympathy appeals first to the unselfish nature, realise • in a more accentuated manner the loss . the colony has sustained. i In Pearson's May number appears a j unique article by Lord Roberts en- | titled, "How to Make a Nation of Marksmen." Beneficial from a Volunteer's point of view the contribution undoubtedly is. Much there is in it that a review here would be incapable of incomprehension or developing. Concisely, the late Commander-in-Chi'if urges the ( establishment of rifle clubs in all climes and under all circumstances, with the main ! idea of a national defence. Proof of the effectiveness of efficient marksmen has been brought home to us in many ways in New Zealand ; but there are those among us who hold that a marksman is not necessarily competent to account for a number of the enemy in a like ratio. Collective firing, these folk maintain, is -he principle that must sust.un an efficient force. One needs to go back no further than the last Trontham assembly, where the collective body which composed the winning team for the Colonial Ammunit.on Company's Chip were in their entirety picked marksmen individually, with their own respective fancies regarding accurato shooting. The article is commended to Volunteers, with the idea that it « ill be appreciated and be beneficial.
